Three Reasons To Think Mobile MRI

Everybody likes a good investment. How do you tell if a mobile MRI is the way to go? This decision has a lot to do with your hospital’s individual situation, but it’s important to understand why a mobile unit would work for you —logistically and financially.

Mobile MRIs offer Convenience and Flexibility

Let’s start with the greatest “pro” there is: mobile MRI units deliver health care to patients that otherwise could be deprived of this medical technology, whether due to location, population size or cost. In addition, a mobile unit can adopt a rotating schedule, moving between locations according to patient volume and need, and allowing providers to efficiently schedule scans for their time with the MRI. A mobile MRI can even be called in as a backup while a fixed unit undergoes maintenance or renovation, or perhaps to alleviate patient backlog.

Lower Fixed Costs

In many cases, an in-house MRI suite is unnecessary or exceeds the budget, making the mobile MRI a welcome option. It offers less expensive installation costs and less installation time, getting you scanning sooner. In addition, sharing the mobile unit between sites allows for sharing of costs.

Potential Source of Increased Revenue

Despite the increase in variable costs, sharing a mobile unit can multiply the opportunity for revenue. Simply by coordinating scan schedules, a group of providers can all reap the benefits of a mobile MRI. The variable costs of mobility can be split, or covered via a standard payment to the owner location, but multiple revenues certainly justify the purchase and costs.

I am considering investing in imaging technology and setting up shop to service under served areas in Ethiopia. I wonder if such units are worth pursing in an environment like that. Unfortunately, the makers in Japan ( where I reside) do not offer mobile options.
