As the clots dislodge near the brain an embolism occurs, and near the heart, a heart attack can occur. As blood flow is restricted in the brain a loss of body functions occurs. Blood clots in the heart cause an irregular heart beat, heart attack, and heart valve abnormalities.

"Cardiac MRI provides reliable alternative for anatomical and fractional assessment of the heat and evaluation of myocardial viability and coronary artery disease," according to doctors Duerinck chief of radiology and Dumar MRI physicist at the VA North Texas Healthcare System in Dallas in an article in Cardiovascular Imaging. Cardiac imaging offers direct visualization and characterization of atheroscleric placque and identify the presence of thrombus (blood clotting) or calcium.
